North Korea launched a missile towards the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, according to information from the South Korean military. The launch was detected by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, which identified the projectile as "unidentified" heading directly towards Pyongyang.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported the announcement at 05:46 on Saturday, Seoul time, which corresponded to the evening of the same date in Portugal. By the time of publication, Japanese authorities had not issued any statement regarding the incident.

The Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, is the preferred designation by the Koreas for this body of water, while Japan uses the former designation. This launch is part of a series of weapons tests conducted by North Korea in recent months, which have been causing increasing tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
