A new study on social support in Portugal identifies opportunities to strengthen the efficiency of the system. The study analyzes public transfer flows in the country.

According to the study, pensions, social support and health move annually more than 86 billion euros in direct public transfers to citizens and healthcare providers. This figure does not include private payments.

Private payments include direct household expenses, health insurance and payments to private service providers. These also represent a significant volume, although they have not yet been accounted for in the total figure.

Consumer credit: Maximum rates reach 18.5% on cards at the end of 2026

Banco de Portugal revealed the maximum interest rates that will apply to consumer credit contracts in the 4th quarter of 2026. On credit cards, credit lines and bank overdrafts, the maximum ceiling was set at 18.5%. In automotive credit, rates range between 5.4% for financial leasing of new cars and 14.3% for credit for used vehicles. In personal credit, the maximum rate is 8.2% for purposes such as education, health and energy transition, and 15.0% for other purposes, such as home credit, renovations and consolidation.
