Consumer credit: Maximum rates reach 18.5% on cards at the end of 2026

Banco de Portugal announced the maximum rates applicable to consumer credit contracts that will be in force in the fourth quarter of 2026. These rates represent the maximum limits that financial institutions may charge on contracts signed or renewed during that period.

On credit cards and credit lines, as well as current accounts, overdraft facilities and unauthorized overdrafts, the maximum rate set is 18.5%. This is the segment with the highest rates.

In automotive credit, rates vary according to the type of contract and the condition of the vehicle. Financial leasing or ALD for new cars has a maximum rate of 5.4%, rising to 6.7% in the case of used cars. Credit for automobiles shows rates of 11.2% for new and 14.3% for used.

Regarding personal credit, the maximum rate for purposes of education, health, energy transition and equipment leasing is 8.2%. For other personal credits, including purposes such as renovations, home and debt consolidation, the maximum ceiling is 15.0%.
