Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), reacted on Thursday to the proposal by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise (LFI), to cancel French debt. Lagarde expressed her position in direct response to the left-wing candidate's initiative.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon is the leader of the political party La France Insoumise and announced his candidacy for the French presidential elections of 2027. His proposal to cancel French debt was presented in the context of the French presidential race.

Lagarde's reaction comes within the scope of her role at the head of the ECB, the institution that oversees European monetary policy and has competence over issues related to the sovereign debt of eurozone countries. The President of the European Central Bank publicly responded to Mélenchon's proposal on Thursday.
