In an interview with media outlets, Eduardo Paes, candidate from the PSD party for the government of Rio de Janeiro, detailed his fiscal policy plans should he be elected. The former mayor of the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro stated that he intends to follow the logic of increasing revenue and decreasing expenses, emphasizing that the obvious needs to be done in this regard.
Paes argued that one of the ways to increase revenue is by fighting tax evasion and expanding the tax base. He commented that the Propag program, a fiscal relief initiative, is not sufficient in the long term, as the implementation of the tax reform and the fiscal recovery fund will make public finances more difficult in the future.
The candidate also questioned the management of current governor Cláudio Castro, asking where the 20 billion reais received from the privatization and concession of CEDAE went. According to Paes, there is no clear demonstration of how these resources were used, stating that there is no bridge to tell this story.
When questioned about proposals to zero out motorcycle IPVA and study the same measure for app-based drivers, Paes showed openness to reviewing concessions, saying he has no problem doing so. He argued that he takes good care of finances, but left open the possibility of changes to existing fiscal policies.
