Several Algarve municipalities today with "very high" fire danger

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) classified several Algarve municipalities today with "very high" rural fire danger. Only Monchique and Portimão were classified with "maximum" danger, the highest level.

The municipalities of Aljezur, Silves, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira, Alcoutim and Castro Marim present "very high" danger. Vila do Bispo, Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António have "high" danger, while Lagoa, Faro, Albufeira and Olhão are at "moderate" danger.

The IPMA uses five levels to determine rural fire danger. The calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation recorded in the previous 24 hours.

Alentejo under yellow warning this weekend due to heat

Nine districts in central and southern mainland Portugal, including Évora, Santarém, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, and Portalegre, will be under yellow warning on Saturday and Sunday due to heat, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
