Nine municipalities in the districts of Santarém, Portalegre, and Faro present maximum danger of rural fire, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere.
The maximum danger alert covers the municipalities of Mação, in Santarém, Gavião and Ponte de Sor, in Portalegre, and Castro Marim, Lagos, Monchique, Silves, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, in the Algarve.
Maximum fire danger corresponds to the highest level of the risk scale used by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere, which ranges from low to maximum.
This alert comes during a critical period for rural fires in Portugal, when meteorological conditions favor the spread of flames.
