The Volta deposit and refund system is recording numbers of participation considered "extraordinary," despite the news headline suggesting nobody wants it. In just five months of operation in Portugal, Portuguese people have already returned more than 305 million bottles and cans.
The return rate is impressive, with Portuguese citizens returning on average more than 3,400 packaging items per minute, demonstrating strong participation in the system.
Volta is a system created to encourage packaging recycling, where consumers pay an additional amount when purchasing beverages that is refunded when they return the empty packaging at designated collection points.
The numbers achieved contradict any narrative of rejection of the system, suggesting that, in practice, Portuguese people are massively embracing the environmental sustainability initiative.
