Shortage of doctors. Medical Council President calls for differentiated measures

Observador9 September 2026 at 14:38

The president of the Medical Council warned that 30% of the population of the Alentejo Coast does not have access to primary healthcare. This situation represents a significant failure in the region's health system, leaving thousands of people without a family doctor or regular medical follow-up.

The health unit serving that region has only about 25 doctors, a number manifestly insufficient to guarantee adequate coverage for the population. This shortage of health professionals aggravates the difficulties of access to primary care.

Faced with this reality, the president called for the implementation of differentiated measures for the Alentejo Coast. The objective is to find specific solutions that allow for the attraction and retention of doctors in that region, ensuring that the population has access to the healthcare it needs.
