A Rapist in King Haakon's Court

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General9 September 2026 at 14:58

Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Norway's Queen Mette-Marit, was present at King Harald V's funeral, who died on August 28, wearing strict mourning and an electronic ankle monitor. The 29-year-old is serving house arrest while awaiting the outcome of his appeal against his four-year prison sentence for two cases of rape and abuse against one of his ex-girlfriends.

Borg was tried for approximately thirty serious crimes, being found guilty of most of them. He was arrested in February, days before the trial, for violating the restraining order imposed on one of his victims. After sentencing, he was allowed to remain at his residence, in preventive detention with electronic security monitoring.

Currently, he lives at Skaugum Palace, monitored at least until October, because the court considers that he presents a high risk of reoffending. The Norwegian royal family thus faces a delicate situation, with the heir to the throne participating in a solemn event while serving precautionary measures for sexual crimes and domestic violence.
