The European Commission considers that local accommodation is "part of the problem" of the housing crisis in European cities like Lisbon. This position comes in the context of a report on housing that addresses the challenges faced by European cities in accessing affordable housing.
The European executive argues that limiting local accommodation, on its own, is not sufficient to solve the problem of housing shortage. The Commission understands that complementary measures are needed to effectively increase housing supply.
Among these measures, Brussels highlights the need to invest in the construction of new housing and the rehabilitation of the existing housing stock. These are seen as structural solutions to address the supply deficit.
The report comes at a time when several European capitals, including Lisbon, are facing growing difficulties in accessing housing, with prices rising significantly and demand clearly outstripping the available supply.
