Singapore's Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, will receive an annual salary equivalent to approximately R$ 14.5 million, becoming the world's highest-paid head of government. The salary increase is over R$ 5 million per year compared to the previous remuneration.
The Singaporean government defended that the salary increase is necessary to attract better leaders to the country. According to the official justification, higher salaries help combat corruption in public service.
The measure is part of a salary policy established years ago in Singapore, which links the earnings of senior public officials to private sector salaries, seeking to ensure competence in public administration.
With the new salary, Lawrence Wong significantly surpasses the earnings of other global leaders, consolidating Singapore's position at the top of the ranking of the highest-paid heads of government internationally.
