A team of Spanish researchers has developed a new injectable hydrogel that allows the gradual release of anticancer drugs directly in the area affected by the tumor. This technology represents a localized approach to chemotherapy administration, in contrast to traditional methods that affect the entire body.
The system was successfully tested in ovarian cancer and glioblastoma models, two types of solid tumors with high mortality rates. Direct application in the tumor area allows for a higher concentration of the medication at the required site.
According to the researchers, this methodology makes it possible to significantly reduce the side effects associated with conventional chemotherapy. By targeting treatment to the tumor in a localized manner, exposure of healthy tissues to anticancer drugs is minimized.
