Volcanic alert raised to V1 at Furnas volcano

Açoriano Oriental9 September 2026 at 10:37

The Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Centre (CIVISA) raised the volcanic alert level to V1 at Furnas volcano, on São Miguel island. Level V1 corresponds to a volcanic system in a metastable equilibrium phase.

The decision to raise the alert level was made due to an increase in seismic activity recorded at the volcano. This change represents an upgrade in the monitoring of volcanic activity in the region.

Furnas volcano is located on São Miguel island, in the Azores archipelago, a region known for its volcanic activity. CIVISA is the organization responsible for monitoring and surveillance of seismovolcanic activity in the region.

Impact of Tobacco on Fertility and the Success of Reproductive Treatments

The World Health Organization warned that one in six people of reproductive age may face difficulties getting pregnant, with smoking being one of the main factors. Studies show that women who smoke have a 40% higher risk of infertility, while those who quit the habit have a 25% lower risk. Research involving more than 60,000 men also revealed that smoking affects male fertility, causing erectile dysfunction and reduced semen quality. Secondhand smoke can halve the chances of success in assisted reproduction treatments, such as in vitro fertilization. WHO recommends caution with new nicotine products and advises health professionals to inform couples about the risks of tobacco.
