The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) confirmed that the episode of meteorological instability recorded on Saturday in the district of Aveiro was caused by a phenomenon known as a 'downburst'. This meteorological phenomenon caused material damage in several municipalities in the region. IPMA revealed today the nature of this atmospheric event. The downburst is characterized by downward wind gusts that spread horizontally when they reach the surface, causing significant destruction in its impact area.
