A meteorological phenomenon occurred in the Albergaria-a-Velha area, resulting from a 'downburst'. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a statement explaining the causes of the phenomenon.
According to IPMA, the occurrence of the downburst was favored by the presence of dry air at the lowest levels of the atmosphere, by intense precipitation and by hail. These combined elements produced strong wind gusts.
The wind gusts were responsible for the damage recorded in the Albergaria-a-Velha region.
