IPMA (Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere) published a note on its website to explain the occurrence of large-sized hail in the north of the country.

According to the institute, the combination of extreme phenomena was responsible for the formation of large-sized ice pellets.

The high humidity and the differences in wind speed created favorable conditions for the formation of clouds with large vertical dimensions.

It was within these clouds of large vertical development that the large-sized hailstones that were observed in the northern region were formed.
