The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) explained that the meteorological phenomenon that caused damage in Aveiro resulted from a "downburst", a downward current of air that hits the ground and propagates horizontally, causing intense and destructive winds. This type of phenomenon is uncommon but can generate significant damage in affected areas. The combination of various atmospheric factors favored the occurrence of thunderstorms and heavy showers in different areas of the North and Center regions of the country. IPMA highlighted that the interaction between atmospheric instability conditions, high humidity, and temperature differences created the favorable scenario for the formation of these severe storms.
