The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) analyzed the meteorological instability episode that occurred on September 5, 2026. This atmospheric phenomenon caused large hail and strong winds, resulting in damage especially in the district of Aveiro.
On that day, the combination of various atmospheric factors favored the occurrence of thunderstorms and heavy showers in different areas of the North and Central regions of the country. IPMA's analysis made it possible to characterize the conditions that led to the formation of this downburst phenomenon in the Aveiro region.
