Social Security paid this Tuesday, September 8, the Complementary Solidary for the Elderly (CSI), a benefit aimed at pensionists with low resources. In June 2026, the CSI reached approximately 245.5 thousand people, the highest value since this social benefit was created, according to Government data.

More than half of beneficiaries currently receive more than 200 euros per month. Between April 2024 and June 2026, the number of people receiving more than 200 euros monthly through the CSI increased from approximately 45 thousand to 132 thousand, now representing 54% of total beneficiaries, compared to approximately 32% previously. One in five people covered by the supplement received more than 300 euros monthly.

The total number of beneficiaries grew 75% in just over two years, going from approximately 140 thousand in April 2024 to approximately 245.5 thousand in June 2026. This growth is related to the increase in the CSI reference value, which went from 550.70 to 670 euros since 2024, and with changes in access conditions, namely the exclusion of children's income for the purposes of granting and reassessing the benefit.

CSI beneficiaries continue to have access to prescription medicines free of charge, but new rules have been introduced that favor the use of generic medicines or limit reimbursement to the reference price, seeking to reduce waste without eliminating the free access for beneficiaries.

Starting October 2026, a new right for railway passengers will come into effect in Portugal: if the operator does not present transportation alternatives within 100 minutes after a delay or cancellation, the passenger can hire another public transport service (train or bus) on their own initiative and request reimbursement of costs, provided they are documented and reasonable. The measure is part of Decree-Law No. 173/2026, which adapts Portuguese legislation to the European regulation on railway passenger rights, while also maintaining compensation rules of 25% to 50% of the ticket price depending on the delay duration.
