Porto Santo: historical errors that continue to be attempted to be remedied (badly)

Funchal Notícias8 September 2026 at 15:51

Dredging works are underway at the port of Porto Santo, as reported by Funchal Notícias. The sediments removed during these dredging works are being deposited in a Blue Flag zone, which has raised concerns.

The excavated sand comes from the breakwater of the Porto de Abrigo in Porto Santo. The intention is to remedy historical errors related to the island's port configuration.

The article's title suggests that these interventions represent an attempt to correct old problems, but in an inadequate manner. The placement of dredged materials in a Blue Flag zone may represent a negative impact on the environmental quality of that certified area.
