Nepal is demanding US$ 20 million in climate compensation for the devastating floods that hit the country in late August. The flooding left more than 1,300 dead and at least 5,500 people missing, totaling more than 6,000 victims between dead and missing.
Nepal's Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, spoke to the British newspaper The Guardian and called on the world's biggest polluters to "wake up" and take shared responsibility for the disaster. He emphasized the need to recognize the impact of carbon emissions from developed nations on vulnerable countries like Nepal.
Scientists believe the climate crisis played a fundamental role in the phenomenon. The catastrophe was triggered when a glacier in the process of melting partially collapsed, causing a landslide and a flash flood that crossed Tibet, the region controlled by China, into Nepal.
After 12 days of rescue operations, hopes of finding survivors among the missing are fading significantly, as recovery efforts advance in the affected areas.
