The Territorial Command of Castelo Branco of the GNR, through the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA) of Covilhã, proceeded to return a black kite to nature after a month of recovery. The bird had been found injured and taken in by the SEPNA team to receive the necessary care for its rehabilitation.
The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a protected bird of prey species in Portugal, belonging to the Accipitridae family. This species is included in the annexes of the EU Birds Directive and benefits from strict legal protection throughout the national territory.
The SEPNA action falls within the scope of the GNR's competencies in the protection of wild fauna and flora, playing a fundamental role in the inspection and rescue of wild animals in vulnerable situations. After the recovery period and the proper assessment of the bird's health condition, the authorities considered that it met the conditions to return to its natural habitat.
