Goodbye flies? This very common plant may be the secret to an insect-free home

Flies are a frequent presence in kitchens during the warmer months, attracted by ripe fruit, food scraps, and improperly stored trash. According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, a very common plant — basil — can work as a natural repellent for flies and other flying insects. The explanation lies in the essential oils present in the leaves, rich in volatile compounds that interfere with insects' sensory systems, making it harder for them to locate food and breeding grounds.

The characteristic smell of basil, valued in gastronomy, produces the opposite effect on many insects. A simple pot placed near a window, on a balcony, or on the kitchen counter can help reduce the presence of these insects. To enhance the repellent effect, you can lightly rub the leaves before placing them near doors or windows, or prepare an infusion with the leaves that, after cooling, can be applied to strategic areas through a spray bottle.

In addition to its repellent properties, basil contains antioxidant compounds, such as flavonoids and tannins, and ursolic acid, which has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties. The plant is also associated with digestive well-being and potential relaxing effects, being used in infusions and aromatic preparations in different parts of the world.

Among the natural alternatives mentioned are apple cider vinegar diluted in water and the use of old CDs on windows, whose reflections create visual effects that can disorient flies. However, hygiene remains a fundamental factor: exposed food scraps, accumulated trash, and poorly cleaned surfaces create favorable conditions for the presence of insects. Properly storing food, regularly cleaning the kitchen, and installing mosquito nets are measures that complement the use of aromatic plants like basil.

MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT COVERED 280 YOUNG PEOPLE IN THREE TRANSMONTANA MUNICIPALITIES

The project (De)Construct, (Re)Think, (Re)Educate, promoted by the Portuguese Union of Mutualities, involved 280 young people aged 10 to 19 in Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Alfândega da Fé, in its first year of implementation, covering 20 classes from the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education. The project focuses on promoting mental health and developing socio-emotional skills, working on areas such as self-esteem, emotional management, psychological well-being and interpersonal relationships. Co-financed by the European Union through Norte 2030 and Portugal 2030, it also has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and is preparing to continue for the 2026/2027 school year.

Additionally, participants reported lower tension and anxiety during activities. Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu, from the Faculty of Agriculture, explained that the team had previously demonstrated the relaxing effects of aromatic compounds in Igusa (tatami material) and that this time sought to explore other benefits such as mood, stress resilience, and task engagement.
