The Centre for Agricultural and Biological Environmental Technologies Research (CITAB) at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is developing new natural biostimulants to make cherry production more sustainable and resistant to adverse environmental conditions.
The project, called BIOsCherry – Innovation and Sustainability in Cherry Production with Natural Biostimulants, is funded by the "la Caixa" Foundation and coordinated by researcher Berta Gonçalves. The objective is to create natural-based solutions that improve cherry tree responses to different stress situations, contributing to increased productivity and fruit quality.
The biostimulants with the best results will be tested in orchards in Trás-os-Montes and Fundão, where their impact on tree development, adaptation to environmental conditions, and production will be evaluated.
The project also aims to valorize endogenous resources and circular economy principles, seeking to contribute to more sustainable agriculture prepared for the effects of climate change.
