Authorities confirmed the death of a third person during the 40th anniversary edition of the Burning Man festival, which ended on Monday (9/7) with the burning of the giant effigy. The number of deaths at this edition is a record for the event.
The person, not yet publicly identified, died while being rushed to a hospital in Reno, Nevada, United States. The festival site is located in the Black Rock desert, about 190 kilometers from that city.
Jerry Allen, sheriff and coroner of Pershing County, confirmed the third death in a statement to NBC News. He explained that although the festival records an average of one death per year, this time there were two deaths within the event boundaries and a third person died en route to the hospital in Reno. The cause of death has not yet been clarified.
This third death follows the death of two participants at the festival site last week. One of them was identified as Craigh Mann, 60 years old, who was found dead.
