Thirteen people have been indicted for the death of cyclist Cláudio Rafael Landeiro, who was killed in Copacabana, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on August 11. The crime occurred when the victim was wrongly accused of having stolen a bicycle. Rafael had gone out on his sister's bicycle and was approached by a security guard. He suffered from mental disorders and was beaten for nine minutes.
Of the thirteen people involved in the crime, four are already in custody. These are Davi Santos Machado and Jorge Luiz Ricardo Dias, who worked as clandestine security guards, in addition to Felipe Eduardo dos Santos Silva and Ailton José da Silva, who appear in security camera footage dressed as delivery workers.
A fifth man, identified as Wellington Luiz Santos de Souza, remains at large. He has several prior police records and previous arrests for crimes such as drug trafficking, bodily injury and threats.
The head delegate of the Copacabana police station, Angelo Lages, responsible for the investigations, told TV Globo that the agents analyzed twelve hours of security camera footage from the area to identify the suspects and reconstruct the events that led to Rafael's death.
