The Évora Court of Appeal condemned a 32-year-old man to two and a half years in prison, with a suspended sentence, for a crime of domestic violence. The defendant had been acquitted at first instance, but the Public Prosecutor's Office appealed the decision.
The second instance court considered it proven that the man committed the crime of domestic violence against his partner. The sentence was suspended, which means the convicted man will not serve actual prison time provided he complies with the imposed conditions.
In addition to the suspended prison sentence, the man was also ordered to pay 5,000 euros in compensation to the victim. This amount is intended to compensate for the damages caused by the violence.
The court also ordered the defendant to stay away from the victim, a measure aimed at protecting the woman from possible retaliation or further violence by the convicted man.
