Thieves steal Renoir works valued at R$ 56 million from museum in France

oglobo8 September 2026 at 09:27

Two thieves stole four artworks from the museum dedicated to impressionist painter Auguste Renoir, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, in the south of France. The theft occurred this Tuesday and the city's mayor, Bryan Masson, estimated the value of the works at 9 million euros, approximately R$ 56 million at the current exchange rate. After being captured by the city's security cameras, the two individuals fled and abandoned one of the stolen paintings during their escape.

The museum, located near Nice, was created in 1960 and operates in the last house where Pierre-Auguste Renoir lived, who died in 1919. The space preserves the original furniture of the residence and displays objects that belonged to the French artist, including his easel and wheelchair, as well as portraits, landscapes, and nudes produced by the painter.

The theft occurs almost a year after the heist at the Louvre in Paris, indicating a wave of thefts at French museums.
