PS will abstain on Chega's motion of censure

Observador7 September 2026 at 23:56

The Socialist Party (PS) decided to abstain on the motion of censure presented by Chega. The socialist leader proposed this position at the party's secretariat meeting that took place last night.

The decision to abstain means that the PS will not vote against the motion of censure, thus allowing it to be approved or rejected by the remaining parties without the weight of a vote against from the main opposition party.

Through this strategy, the PS leader intends to maintain room for maneuver to oppose the Government. The intention is clear: to prevent Chega from associating the PS with AD (Democratic Alliance), the coalition that supports the executive.

This position allows the PS to distinguish itself from Chega and not give ammunition to the right-wing party to create a narrative of understanding between the two parties, while simultaneously maintaining its political independence.
