Fueling in Spain costs, on average, 40 cents less per liter than in Portugal. This price difference between the two Iberian countries has been the subject of political debate.

José Luís Carneiro, Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), accused the Government of making money from the increase in fuel prices. The accusation comes in the context of criticisms of the pricing policy practiced in Portugal.
