The trial of the case involving the Voluntary Firefighters of Mirandela began at the Judicial Court of Bragança, with former commander Edgar Trigo, current commander Luís Carlos Soares and the Humanitarian Association of Firefighters as defendants, accused of embezzlement, abuse of power and falsification of documents related to subsidies from the Special Forest Fire Combat Device between 2014 and 2017. The Public Prosecution argues that 'ghost' teams were reported to Civil Protection and that firefighters received five euros less per shift, in a scheme that allegedly provided the institution with a financial advantage of 121,524.99 euros. The defenses contest the accusations, stating that there was no appropriation of public funds. The trial has around a hundred witnesses and is expected to last several sessions.
