A pilot project called "Respirar Fundo", co-financed by the European Union, detected poor air quality in 12 schools in the territories of northern and central Portugal. The study involved 13 primary and secondary schools, covering municipalities from various regions of the country.
The participating schools were located in ten municipalities: Ponte de Lima, Barcelos, Guimarães, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila Nova de Gaia, Ílhavo, Caldas da Rainha, Sintra, Lisbon and Sesimbra. These municipalities represent both urban and rural areas of the Portuguese territory.
The project analyzed the air quality inside schools, identifying problems that may affect the health of students and professionals who attend these educational establishments. The initiative arises in the context of greater European concern with air quality in enclosed spaces, particularly in locations with a large concentration of people.
