Eleven alpinists died following an avalanche in the Russian Caucasus, in the Bezengi gorge, confirmed the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The avalanche occurred on Sunday and surprised a group of 33 alpinists who were in the region.
Unfortunately, 11 people lost their lives and another six were injured following the accident. Ten alpinists managed to descend safely to the base without injuries.
The Bezengi gorge is known for its mountains and a glacier, being an area frequented by alpinists. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate the remaining members of the group.
