Nepal has recorded a significant increase in the death toll, rising to 1,355 fatalities after a natural catastrophe struck the country. Authorities continue to keep nearly five thousand people on the missing list, a number that may still increase as search and rescue operations proceed.
The tragedy was caused by a strong flash flood that devastated several entire villages located in the mountainous region near the border with Tibet. The affected villages suffered massive destruction, with homes and infrastructure completely razed by the force of the waters.
Rescue operations have been hindered by the adverse geographical conditions of the Himalayan region, where villages are frequently located in hard-to-reach areas. Emergency teams continue to work in the field to locate survivors and recover bodies from the rubble.
The Nepali government declared a state of emergency and requested international assistance to deal with the scale of the catastrophe, one of the deadliest to affect the country in recent years.
