More rain and strong wind heading to Portugal: this will be the worst weather day of the week

Postal do Algarve7 September 2026 at 06:00

The week of September 7 to 13 begins with summer weather in Portugal, but a cold front associated with a depression crossing the Bay of Biscay will temporarily alter the meteorological conditions. The front's approach is expected between Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing rain, strong wind and a drop in temperatures, mainly in the North and Centre regions of the country.

Tuesday will start with summer conditions, but cloud cover will increase during the afternoon and rain may arrive in the North by the end of the day. It is on Wednesday, September 9, that Luso Meteo predicts the most adverse conditions of the week, with rain during the early morning and morning in the North and Centre, moderate to strong wind from North or Northeast with locally strong gusts on the coast and exposed areas, and another drop in temperatures.

The cold front should lose intensity as it moves south, so precipitation tends to disappear quickly throughout Wednesday. During the afternoon, cloud cover will decrease and the sun will return to several regions, with the anticyclone reinforcing itself on Thursday and the weather becoming dry and stable again.

The break from the heat will be short. From Friday onwards, temperatures rise again and Luso Meteo admits a new approach to 40°C in the South. For the weekend, various scenarios point to dry weather, lots of sun and very high values, with even the possibility of a heat wave between September 11 and 16/18, although there is still uncertainty about the intensity and duration of the episode.

Up to 9°C less: between tomorrow and Wednesday, polar air will cause a sharp drop in temperatures

A mass of polar air should cause a sharp drop in temperatures in mainland Portugal between Tuesday and Wednesday, with differences that could reach 9°C. The high temperatures at the beginning of the week will start to drop on Tuesday in the North and on the coast, becoming more widespread on Wednesday. This change will be associated with a reorganization of the atmospheric circulation over the Iberian Peninsula, with an anticyclone in the Atlantic combined with a low pressure area at altitude over Europe, favoring a north and northwest flow that will transport polar air to Portugal.
