Monitoring of NAO and EA

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 13:17

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) now provides monthly updated information on two important atmospheric variability patterns. This information results from the monitoring of two atmospheric circulation patterns in the Euro-Atlantic sector.

The monitored patterns are the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the East-Atlantic Pattern (EA). These two patterns play a significant role in climate variability in the Euro-Atlantic region, influencing the meteorological and climatic conditions of that geographical area.

The availability of this information by IPMA allows for a more regular and systematic monitoring of these atmospheric oscillations, contributing to a better understanding of the climate patterns that affect Portugal and the surrounding region.
