Algarve viticulture increased production and is expected to approach the 2024 record

Jornal do Algarve6 September 2026 at 15:11

Algarve viticulture is harvesting higher quality grapes and expects a production increase of 12 to 15% compared to 2025, approaching the record of two million litres achieved in 2024. The harvest is almost complete and the sector's prospects are positive, according to the president of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), Sara Silva. In 2025, declines were recorded compared to 2024, but this year the estimate is to surpass 2025 figures and approach the values of the record year.

The 60 associated producers of the CVA are expected to reach between 1.8 and 1.9 million litres. Despite the change in climate patterns, which brought the harvest start forward to mid-July, the expectation is for good production in both quality and quantity. The Algarve region already has approximately 2,300 hectares dedicated to vineyards, with another 200 hectares planned for planting over the next three years.

The average selling prices practiced by producers stand at one euro per kilogram, although some more sought-after or scarcer varieties achieve higher values. Regarding internationalisation, Sara Silva stated that there has been progress, both in the work done in the region to make wines known to people who can carry the message beyond borders, and in the gastronomic and tourism experiences associated with wine.

S&P forecasts reinsurers to cut prices in 2027. And identifies opportunities

S&P Global Ratings maintains a stable outlook for the global reinsurance sector in 2026-2027, despite forecasting further price reductions in 2027, pressured by the high capacity available. The agency anticipates that global reinsurer ROE will decline from 12%-15% in 2026 to 10%-13% in 2027, and that the P&C combined ratio will deteriorate from 92%-95% to 94%-97%. Nevertheless, financial fundamentals remain solid, with 85% of companies with stable outlook and average rating at the upper end of the "A" category. S&P identifies growth opportunities in the insurance gap, particularly in cybersecurity, renewable energy and data centers, and recommends that reinsurers focus on specialization and innovation rather than competing solely on price.
