Mediterranean warming favors storms that could compromise airport safety

This situation increases the potentially available energy for the formation of very intense storms in the region. The resulting storms can cause heavy rainfall, intense wind gusts, reduced visibility and other severe meteorological phenomena. This scenario represents a potential threat to the safety of airports located in the Mediterranean region.

IPMA places seven districts under yellow warning

The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) issued a yellow warning for hot weather for seven districts of mainland Portugal — Beja, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Lisbon, Setúbal and Portalegre — until 9:00 PM on Monday, due to high maximum temperature values. Until Saturday, IPMA had maintained a yellow warning in 17 of the 18 mainland districts, with the exception of Viana do Castelo. Additionally, a yellow warning was issued for the Western group of the Azores due to heavy rainfall and possibility of thunderstorm. The yellow warning is the least severe on a three-level scale and indicates risk for activities dependent on meteorological conditions.
