The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a yellow warning for Coimbra due to extreme heat and thunderstorm risk. This yellow warning covered up to 17 districts across the country.
The warning remained in effect until 21:00, during which period high temperatures and the possibility of electrical storms were expected.
The authorities recommended that the population take precautions against the adverse weather conditions, avoiding prolonged sun exposure and paying attention to developments in the atmospheric situation.
This alert comes in the context of a heat wave that has been affecting various regions of the country, leading IPMA to progressively expand the number of districts under yellow warning.
