Fitch raises rating of Portugal to "A+" with stable outlook

Público4 September 2026 at 23:38

The Fitch Ratings financial rating agency decided to raise Portugal's rating from "A" to "A+", assigning a stable outlook. This decision represents an improvement in the assessment of Portuguese sovereign debt by the agency.

Fitch highlighted the projected trajectory of reduction of Portuguese public debt as one of the determining factors for this upgrade. The agency also mentioned the country's solid budgetary balances as another positive element that influenced the decision.

The Portuguese Ministry of Finance noted that this upgrade places Portugal at the level of countries such as France and Belgium in terms of sovereign risk rating, representing recognition of the country's positive economic trajectory.
