Duarte de Armas, squire of the House of King D. Manuel I, was in Valença in 1509 to travel through and document all the fortresses on the border with Castile, by royal decree. His mission was to draw them and identify the vulnerable points, which he described as "plugging all the holes". This historical passage serves as the theme for this year's edition of the History Route.
The History Route is an initiative that runs until Sunday inside the Fortress of Valença. The event recreates the journey of Duarte de Armas to the 16th century, transporting visitors to the era of the navigations and the fortification of the Portuguese border.
Throughout the three days of the event, merchants, craftsmen, musicians, artists, knights and period characters bring life to the streets and spaces of the Fortress. The program includes markets, camps, arts and crafts, music, theater, gastronomy and moments of spectacle.
