A mass of air from North Africa, carrying suspended dust, began affecting mainland Portugal yesterday, causing poor air quality across much of the territory, particularly in the Centro and Sul regions. The phenomenon is expected to persist over the next few days, causing an increase in concentrations of inhalable natural origin particles (PM10).
PM10 particles have effects on human health, especially in children, elderly people, and more sensitive individuals. The possibility of isolated thunderstorms and showers may also cause mud rain between this afternoon and the next early morning.
The Directorate-General for Health has issued recommendations for the population, warning that everyone should avoid prolonged efforts, limit outdoor physical activity, and avoid exposure to risk factors such as tobacco smoke and irritant products.
The most vulnerable groups, namely children, elderly people, patients with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma, and cardiovascular patients, should remain indoors with windows closed. Chronic patients should continue their ongoing medical treatments and, in case of worsening symptoms, contact the Linha Saúde 24 or seek care at a health facility.
