Capybara Samba, who escaped from a zoo in southern England, was seen alive for the first time in five months. A photograph taken by a member of the public and sent to Marwell Zoo in Hampshire was verified by the institution and confirmed that the nine-month-old animal remains alive and at large.
Samba went missing on March 17 while being transferred, along with her sister Tango, to a temporary enclosure. Tango was found shortly after and returned to the zoo, but Samba managed to escape a large search operation that mobilized drones, dogs, surveillance cameras and volunteers.
Since the escape, the capybara is believed to have traveled several kilometers through the area, appearing on the banks of the River Itchen. A spokesperson for Marwell confirmed the sighting but said there are no further updates to share at this time.
