Figurado de Barcelos now benefits from European protection as a Geographical Indication for artisanal and industrial products, in a decision by the European Union Intellectual Property Office. This recognition reinforces the protection of Figurado de Barcelos production and establishes a European framework for the denomination.
According to the local authority, this recognition represents another step in the protection and enhancement of Figurado de Barcelos, reinforcing the affirmation of an artisanal production deeply connected to the identity, tradition, and territory of Barcelos. The European recognition comes after the registration of Figurado de Barcelos in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The Municipality now aims to achieve the same level of protection for Olaria de Barcelos and Bordado de Crivo de Barcelos, continuing the work of enhancement, protection, and safeguarding of other important expressions of the artisanal heritage of the municipality and reinforcing its affirmation in the European space.
