Ten new permanent public drinking fountains were installed in the historic center of Santa Maria da Feira since July, preventing the consumption of approximately 80,000 disposable plastic bottles during the Medieval Journey in Terra de Santa Maria. The approximately 25,000 liters of tap water consumed during the event demonstrated the good acceptance of the service by residents and visitors, also avoiding the use of about 800 kilograms of plastic.
The initiative is by Indaqua Feira, the company responsible for managing public water supply and sanitation services in the municipality, with the support and monitoring of the Santa Maria da Feira Municipal Council. The municipal company Feira Viva distributed more than 1,000 aluminum canteens to volunteers, actors, extras, musicians and dancers who during the event favored reusable bottles.
The ten drinking fountains are located at strategic points in public spaces, namely next to the Tribunal da Feira, Municipal Council, Rossio, Municipal Swimming Pools, Casa do Moinho, Rua Direita, Museu Convento dos Lóios, Children's Park on Rua do Castelo, Quinta do Castelo and next to the swing on the climb up to the Castle. The Medieval Journey was the first large-scale event to benefit from these facilities.
The entities involved intend, through this measure, to reinforce the use of tap water and promote more sustainable consumption habits, enhancing public space and providing a better experience for all who visit the city.
