The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) classified today several municipalities in the Algarve with fire danger between "high" and "very high". Monchique, Loulé and Tavira are the municipalities with "very high" risk, while Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Portimão, Silves, São Brás de Alportel, Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António present "high" danger. Lagos and Faro have "moderate" danger and Lagoa, Albufeira and Olhão present "low" risk.
IPMA uses a five-level fire danger scale, ranging from "low" to "extreme". The calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of precipitation recorded in the previous 24 hours.
Due to the hot weather in the region, the Algarve is under yellow warning until 7pm on Saturday. This is the least severe warning on a three-level scale and is issued whenever there is a risk situation for activities dependent on weather conditions.
