DGS advises these people to stay home: phenomenon is affecting Portugal and will last until this day

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued an alert to the Portuguese population due to the presence of suspended dust from the North African deserts, which are affecting mainland Portugal, with greater impact on the Central and Southern regions. The phenomenon, which began on Thursday, September 3rd, is expected to last until Saturday, September 5th. The DGS recommends that children, elderly people, people with chronic respiratory problems and cardiovascular patients remain indoors with windows closed. The general population should avoid prolonged exertion and outdoor physical activities. The dust increases the concentration of inhalable PM10 particles in the air, which may worsen symptoms in vulnerable groups, and in case of worsening they should contact the SNS 24 Hotline.

Spain's State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has launched its tenth season of naming major storms and DANAs (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos - Isolated High-Level Depression). The naming system is fundamental not only for the technical and scientific identification of these meteorological phenomena, but mainly for public communication. Studies show that the population pays more attention to adverse weather warnings and safety recommendations when threats are associated with a name, making naming an essential tool for prevention and civil protection.
