The Directorate-General for Health issued an alert about the poor air quality in Portugal due to the concentration of dust from North Africa that is suspended in the atmosphere. The situation affects the quality of the air breathed by the population.

The DGS recommended that the most vulnerable population stay home whenever possible, as a way to minimize exposure to the particles present in the air. This recommendation aims to protect the groups most susceptible to the negative effects of atmospheric pollution.

The phenomenon is due to the transport of dust from the Sahara Desert, an event that occurs periodically and regularly affects air quality in Portugal, especially during the warmer months.

DGS advises these people to stay home: phenomenon is affecting Portugal and will last until this day

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued an alert to the Portuguese population due to the presence of suspended dust from the North African deserts, which are affecting mainland Portugal, with greater impact on the Central and Southern regions. The phenomenon, which began on Thursday, September 3rd, is expected to last until Saturday, September 5th. The DGS recommends that children, elderly people, people with chronic respiratory problems and cardiovascular patients remain indoors with windows closed. The general population should avoid prolonged exertion and outdoor physical activities. The dust increases the concentration of inhalable PM10 particles in the air, which may worsen symptoms in vulnerable groups, and in case of worsening they should contact the SNS 24 Hotline.

Eleven municipalities in four districts at maximum fire danger

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed eleven municipalities in four districts at maximum rural fire danger due to intense heat. The affected municipalities are Vimioso, Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro and Freixo de Espada à Cinta (Bragança), Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel, Guarda, Almeida and Sabugal (Guarda), Penamacor (Castelo Branco) and Pampilhosa da Serra (Coimbra). Additionally, more than 50 municipalities in nine districts face very high fire danger. IPMA also maintains yellow warning for 14 districts until Saturday due to hot weather, with temperatures ranging from 16°C minimum to 37°C maximum, and forecasts cloudy skies with possibility of showers and thunderstorms in the interior of the North and Centre.
