The Municipality of São Brás de Alportel will provide free school transport for the 2026/2027 academic year, through a network of 11 special routes for students in basic and secondary education who meet the requirements defined in current legislation. The measure seeks to ensure safe and adjusted travel to students' needs, supporting families in daily commutes and encouraging the use of public transport.
The 11 routes, identified by colors such as Green, Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange, Purple, Pink, and Dark Blue, cover different areas of the municipality. The network serves the EB 2,3 Poeta Bernardo de Passos School, the José Belchior Viegas Secondary School, and the primary schools of Alportel, Mesquita, and Vilarinhos. The plan includes one daily morning trip between home and school, and two daily trips on school days in the opposite direction.
The schedules were defined in coordination with the School Grouping, with departures between 07:00 and 07:35 for students in the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education, and at 07:50 for primary school students. The special routes are created when existing public transport cannot adequately meet students' needs, namely due to incompatibility with school schedules or unsuitable transport conditions.
The Municipal School Transport Plan was developed based on the estimated number of students, information provided by the School Grouping, and experience from previous years. The Mayor of the Municipal Council, Marlene Guerreiro, highlighted that the support helps reduce family expenses and ensures that distance to school is not an obstacle to the educational path.
